With fishing and the shooting range activities off to a
strong start we have a great line up for January 2020!
The Fish of the Month is Kingfish/Wahoo. Kingfish are related to the Spanish Mackerel and is a nice meaty eating fish. Monroe County Minimum Size Limit is 24″ fork length. The daily bag limit is 3 per harvester and it is open year-round. Bring your catch to MarineMax to be entered in the Monthly contest.
The
Rod and Gun Get Together is Thursday, January 30th at 5pm. Our own Bill
Tweardy will show and discuss: “Building a split bamboo fly rod, how and why” Please come for wine and refreshments and enjoy the
presentation. Rod and Gun Get Togethers are open to Members and their
guests.
Reef Cup 2020 will be the 35th Anniversary celebration – January 22nd – 25th.

Rifle target range and our great Archery
range/course with 3D Animal targets at
varying shooting ranges from 20-60 yards. RGC members and their guests are

Card Sound Shooting
Sports, which is
located on Card Sound Road has clay target ranges for Trap, Skeet, and Five Stand
Sporting Clays, as well as an Air Rifle target range. The Archery range/course with 3D Animal targets offers varying shooting
ranges from 20-60 yards. We have four
3D targets on the bow
range, including a Whitetail
Deer, a Mule Deer, a Wolf and a Black Bear.
The
Range is available to Rod & Gun members and is open Tuesday,
Thursday and Saturday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, No Appointment
Necessary!
The Card Sound Range is
seasonally open mid-December through mid-April – see our Events Calendar for exact dates. The usage fees
are $30 per round for members and $35 for guests of members (one box of 25
shells). Guns are available to rent for $50 per day.

Get your family and friends together and sign up for the Most fun Fishing Tournament on the Reef on Saturday, December 28th. The Entry fee is $400 per boat. Grab your children and grandchildren and enjoy a great day of fishing followed by a fun Awards Presentation and Cocktail Reception at 5:30pm at the Racquet Club. New boat? New to fishing tournaments? The Holiday Fishing Tournament is a perfect event to get your feet wet! The Captain’s meeting is Friday, December 27th, 5:30pm at the Racquet Club with cocktails and appetizers. We ask that at least one member from the team attend the Captain’s meeting. Each month, a species is identified as target. The angler (ORC member or guest) who weighs in the largest of said pescado during that month, receives a $50 tackle shop gift certificate along with notoriety as the month’s winner and angling bragging rights of incomparable measure!
Must be weighed at MarineMax tackle shop. Weigh-in hours are daily from 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
For months that recognize two different fish, each is treated separately.

Tuesday and Wednesday, December 10 and 11, Golf and sailfishing – the two most popular recreational pastimes on The Reef – are paired up again for the 19th Annual Grand Masters competition. Click on – Events Calendar – for additional information and registration forms.
December is a great month for Family activities. All three activities are family friendly. Your children and grandchildren will love being included in the competition and festivities of the HolidayFishing Tournament on Saturday, December 28th! Any Rod and Gun members with new boats this year? Thinking of entering your first fishing tournament? The Captain’s Meeting is Friday the 27th at the Racquet Club. The Awards presentations and Cocktail reception is Saturday, December 28th 5:30pm at the Racquet Club. The Holiday Tournament is a super fun and the swag is great.
We have TWO Family Days at the Range this December: Thursday, 26th and Tuesday 31st !! We encourage all members to come out! There are shotguns for rent. The newly renovated range has Skeet, Twister, Five Stand, Bow Range and Air Gun stations. The world famous hot dogs will be served. It is a really fun day! Click HERE for directions to the Range.
We are kicking off December with our first Get Together on Thursday the 19th. These are informal presentations hosted by the Rod and Gun Board in the Card Room at the Tennis Center. Holiday Fishing Tournament Rules
This is a ONE DAY family and friends
fishing tournament for common edible reef dwellers, along with blue water
species. The event is open to all members and sponsored guests. Boat team
competition, with a maximum of four anglers per boat. No restrictions on
tackle, other than hook-n-line. All state and federal fishing regulations to
apply. No kites or aerial devices permitted. All boats must depart from and
return to Ocean Reef waters. Scoring will be 10 points per pound for eligible
weight species, and 200 points for billfish releases. Entry fee is $430 per
boat.
Winning teams will be determined by all
point’s total, with first, second and third place(s) being recognized.
Additionally, there will be a Top Boat / Reef Score awarded to the highest
point accumulation, not to include a Billfish in the team score. Junior angler
catches of merit will also be considered.
Eligible Species: Yellowtail, Mutton and
Mangrove Snapper. Grouper, Mackerel, Black and Yellowfin Tunas, Tripletail,
Wahoo, Dolphin and Billfish.

Our Annual Social will be on Tuesday, March 24th with details to follow. Another great Ocean Reef Event is the Grand Masters: The19th Annual Grand Masters Competition (Dec. 10-11). It is a unique event – featuring a two-day tournament featuring both golf (day 1) and fishing (day 2). The Entry Fee includes a Welcome Luncheon, Cocktail Reception and an Awards Dinner. It has been a busy tuna fishing Summer/Fall for Rod and Gun Members with the first name John!
John Weiland caught two Big Eye Tuna off the coast of New Jersey. John Brainard caught a 68” Bluefin Tuna estimating 230lb off the Cape. John Grunow caught an 89” Bluefin Tuna estimating 450lbs off Chatham.

The Rod and Gun Club membership has so much to offer. The Annual Membership dues are $150 and includes family members under 23 years. The 2019-2020 season is being planned. This season the Member Event will be for couples. The Event was sold out the last two years, so stay tuned for details and a date. In December there are two terrific family days one is the Family Day at the Range and the other is the Holiday Off-Shore and Reef Fishing Tournament. Our member children have fun activities at both events. We are thrilled with the all-time participation at our Clay Shooting Range located on Card Sound Road. Many sportsmen comment on how fortunate it is to have a place to practice skeet with no appointment necessary! The Range will be open in Season Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10-3pm. We also provide informal gatherings with guest speakers and opportunities for sporting travel trips.
